Fennessy Lake Fishing Report October 12 2024

Here is a fishing report from October 12, 2024 for Fennessy Lake. I fished Fennessy Lake, a small lake just outside the metro Grand Rapids (Michigan) area. The goal was to target bass and bluegill with a tenkara rod and tenkara flies. I brought a spinning rod as a backup as it was windy. I fished from about 2:00 pm EST to 3:00 pm EST.

The Weather

While significant rain was in the forecast (which we sat through at a GVSU football game that evening), the weather was pretty nice for a middle-October afternoon. It was sunny; I don't think that there was a cloud in the sky. The temperature was in the mid-50s—cool but not intolerable. The most significant issues weather-wise were the wind and low water levels. The wind was brisk out of the East North East. The water levels were the lowest that I've seen on this lake. Fenessy Lake doesn't have many streams to feed it, which makes it prone to low water levels, especially with our recent drought issues.

How I Fished

I didn't use the spinning rod I brought as the tenkara rod proved sufficient. I worked along the south shore and kept the wind at my back, which allowed me to use the tenkara rod well enough. I used one of our 12' Bivvy Creek Rogue tenkara rods and tenkara line holder.

Results

The Futsu Kebari proved to be an excellent choice. I found some bluegills and bass in the shallow flats (water depth of about a foot). These areas of water where I found the fish were sheltered from the wind due to lilypads. In my short time fishing, I managed to catch two bluegills and one bass on the tenkara rod.

For an October afternoon, it was an enjoyable fishing trip. I have definitely had worse days on the water.
